Every year for the past 5 years I have been searching for the perfect Christmas nail polish – no joke. A couple of years ago around November, I saw a Sally Hansen polish that was the perfect Christmas red with just the right amount of glitter. I didn’t buy it. I thought “Oh I’ll come back just before Christmas and get it“. And then when I did, it was sold out. And it’s been sold out ever since (heart breaking).
So this year when I walked past the Sally Hansen stand and saw the perfect Christmas red (the shade is called Ruby Shimmers) just sitting there staring at me in all its perfection, I nabbed it as fast as I possibly could. I tried to explain to my friends who were looking at me a bit cluelessly, that this was a very big deal.
Now I’m not 100% sure this is the exact same Christmas red that I set my heart on five years ago, because it comes in a Miracle Gel set. I haven’t tried Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel before, as I’m usually so devoted to Essie. But I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to give it a whirl and let you all know what I think.
So the instructions said to apply two coats of the colour (no base coat needed apparently, but I’m a faithful base coat applier so I applied anyway) and then to finish with one coat of the black bottle Miracle Gel (it’s a clear liquid, don’t worry).
Just to clarify this “Gel set” isn’t actually Gel polish. I used to have an addiction to Gel, which left my nails sad and weak so I do everything I can to avoid Gel. This is basically just normal nail polish, but the top coat is magical and adds a thick layer to the polish and somehow keeps your nails lasting long and gives the whole Gel effect. I hope this makes sense – if it doesn’t, feel free to ask Google.
For research purposes (lol) I painted one hand with one coat of the colour and the other hand with two coats of the colour. They look exactly the same. However, I’ve had it on my nails for a total of 24 hours and the hand with the one coat has already chipped. Just an FYI.
But in all seriousness, I do really love it. I’m probably going to be wearing this colour on my nails right up until 2016, just to make up for all those Christmases I didn’t have it.
