If you don’t already know, I’m the Queen of nails and nail polishes. It all started in Year 6 when my friend said that I have pretty nails. Ever since my nail-ego grew and I became obsessed with always having perfect nails. Today, I’ll impart my years of nail-knowledge with you.
Firstly, your nail polish will never last long if you haven’t got strong, healthy nails. The best thing to do is not to grow them too long (especially to begin with!). I always apply Essie’s “Grow Stronger” base coat before any coloured polish. If your nails are really, really weak – apply this every other day and you’ll notice a massive difference within a couple of weeks. This not only helps to strengthen them but also to prevent staining. There’s nothing worse than getting yellow/green nails!
Another essential step in nail painting is to apply a top coat. This helps the nail polish last way longer. The best top coat I’ve ever used is Essie’s “No Chips Ahead”. It also adds a nice shine to your nails.
I have found that investing in a good base and top coat is more important than buying an expensive nail colour. For this post, I selected a few of my favourite nail polishes – some that I think are key brands/colours to have in your collection.
Sidenote: I have no fine-motor skills whatsoever, so I can’t do the fancy decorating stuff without getting a headache. Therefore I like to stick to plain coloured nails all the time.
Most of my polishes are Essie (which sell in the UK at roughly £8). This is down to personal preference. I love their brushes because they’re thick and easy to apply. This first nail polish has been my favourite for the past two years. Whenever I’m in doubt, I grab this colour. It goes with any outfit and always looks cute. If you can only afford one, I’d definitely recommend this.
Essie – Fiji
I’d also recommend having a red in your collection. These are two of my favourites from Essie – one for winter and one for summer.
Essie – Twin Sweater Set (Darker Red) and 5th Avenue (Bright Red)
Another brand I really love is Barry M, especially their Gelly Hi-Shine polishes (priced at £3.99). These can last with no chips for a good 4/5 days, which is amazing for the price! Their formula is thick as well, so most of the time you can get away with only applying one coat.
Barry M – Blueberry (Left), Huckleberry (middle) and Damson (Right)
Another amazing brand for nail polishes is Butter London. I only own one of these due to the massive dent it does to the bank balance (£14). I made sure that I picked out a colour that I knew I’d wear often. A coral is perfect for spring and summer, it adds a cute pop to any outfit.
Butter London – Trout Pout
And lastly, Dior. This is a polish I got as a birthday present. It’s safe to say apart from the price (£18), it’s amazing! Everything from the formula, the brush, the colour and the packaging. Dior won my heart with this nail polish.
