I had a growth spurt in Year 9, at the age of 14. I went from being one of the smallest girls in the school to one of the tallest basically over night. This sudden growth didn’t only result in me having to stand at the back in school class photographs but it also gifted me with some pesky little stretch marks on my bum.
I hated them with a passion but once I realised how common it is for girls to get them, it was the biggest relief.
Girls – if you have stretch-marks and you’re self-conscious about them, I have three pieces of advice for you.
1. Know that it’s not the end of the world. Half of women have stretch-marks. I promise you that the majority of your friends have them somewhere on their body. Stretch-marks do not mean that you’re fat or ugly. It’s a sign that you’ve grown up, so welcome to the club!
2. Bio Oil is your best friend. You can buy a 200ml bottle from Amazon for £9.99. It’s one of those products where a little bit goes a long way. Bio Oil helped me so much. I used it daily for about 5 years and my marks are almost invisible now. You’ll see a massive difference within just two months!
3. They fade! When stretch-marks first appear on your skin, they look the worst that they will ever look. They’re bigger, bolder and redder. Over time they will start to fade (even without any products – although products give them a little nudge in the right direction). They’ll thin out into tiny little silver lines that are barely visible on your skin.
Stretch-marks are cruel, I know (I think I cried a few too many tears over mine), but I promise you that they’re not as bad as you think they are. I wish somebody told me that years ago.
