1 Kings 2:2-4 – When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.
“I am about to go the way of all the earth, but you – be strong; show what you’re made of! Do what God tells you. Walk in the paths he shows you; follow the life map absolutely, keep an eye out for the signposts, His course for life set out in the revelation to Moses; then you’ll get on well in whatever you do and wherever you go.”
My dad is wise. Any advice he gives me, I’m very likely to follow. This is a precious moment in the Bible, when King David is on the verge of death and he gives his final goodbye to his son with his best advice. He isn’t about to leave his kingdom in the hands of just anyone – he wants his son to be well equipped for his new title as King.
The ‘life-map’ David mentions here is God’s Word. He tells his son to be strong, and dig yourself in God’s Word. To follow God’s path with all that he has! I imagine the intensity in David’s eyes and voice as he tells his son this. David lived a long life, with most of it dedicated to the Lord – he understands the importance of God’s Word and he’s desperate for his son to understand it too.
David was the one who defeated Goliath with his big faith. He was the one who had to wait over 20 years for God’s promise to come to fruition. He endured and he conquered. He loved and he lost. He was all in for God.
Solomon grew up to be one of the wisest people in the whole Bible. He was prosperous, rich and continually blessed with God’s wisdom. He wrote Proverbs – the book of wisdom!
Both David and Solomon are a true testament to the prosperity of having a bible-centered life, with their lives wholeheartedly focused on God. I fully believe that David’s advice is pure gold. Treasure is found in God’s Word.
