1 Thessalonians 2:4 – For we are not trying to please men, but God, who tests our hearts.
A couple of sentences prior to this verse, Paul speaks about how God has entrusted him to preach the Gospel. I don’t think that the connection of these two verses are a coincidence.
I think God saw Paul’s honest, pure heart towards His Kingdom and because of that He entrusted Paul with communicating His Word. He saw that Paul was prepared to lay down His pride in order to spread God’s Word. He knew that Paul was in it for God and not for anyone or anything else.
That’s the kind of faith that I’m striving for. I pray that God will grow me into a child of faith like Paul. One who saw God as the only priority. Paul only wanted to please God. Not his neighbours, his friends or the people who threatened to kill him. Paul was well and truly living for God and only God.
And now Paul has become one of the most renowned people within the Bible (other than Jesus himself, of course). He wrote numerous books within the Bible and his faithfulness is known all across the world.
Isn’t that amazing?!
It’s a scary prayer to pray, but we can approach God and ask Him how to live like that. We can ask Him to walk by our side and teach us how to put Him first. If Paul’s life is anything to go by, I’m more than sure that God will take us on a journey more beautiful and wonderful than we could ever imagine.
