2 Corinthians 1:3-5 – Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
The message version of this verse says, He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person like God was there for us. We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort – we get a full measure of that, too.
For some reason this verse has never jumped out at me before and I think it’s because I’ve never read the MSG version. I love how Paul comforts us in the fact that God’s healing comfort always out weighs the hard times we have to endure. We will never come across a hard time where God isn’t right next to us, ready to comfort.
And then I also love how our hard times are never wasted. “He brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for them…”. That is so beautiful. Whatever you are going through right now isn’t wasted. God will use it. God will allow you to help someone else overcome their hard time through you overcoming yours.
