Work of art
Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
This is my mum’s favourite Bible verse – she loves the version that says we are His masterpiece. Ever since I was little she told me about this verse. I think it’s one of the first ones I had memorised off by heart.
I was reading that in Greek, the word ‘workmanship’ translates to poiéma, which is the same word we derive the English word poem from.
Now I’m no poet at all – in fact it was one of the things I found most difficult in English at school – but I do know that poems are renowned for their beauty. Not outward, obvious beauty that can just be seen, but inner beauty. Beauty that comes with meaning, time and a lot of deep thought. Each word that sits within a poem is carefully chosen, and purposefully placed.
Poems are a work of art. Just like we are God’s work of art. Carefully chosen, purposefully made and deeply thought about. We aren’t just made the way we are by coincidence. There is meaning in each of us. A purpose that God has for us to leave a beautiful, lasting impact on His world.
