John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up eternal life.
This is the story of the Samaritan Woman. If you haven’t given it a read before, I strongly recommend you do! I’ve mentioned a fair few times throughout my devotionals this year how much I love this chapter in the Bible.
This woman had five husbands, and was known in Samaria for being quite promiscuous. I wonder if she was searching for something in those relationships – perhaps acceptance? Affection? Attention? Love? Whatever it was, she wasn’t getting enough. As Jesus put it, she was still thirsty for more.
She was looking for love in humans, and it simply wasn’t enough. Jesus knew exactly what she needed to quench her soul’s thirst – Him. She needed something that the world just couldn’t give her enough of. She needed real, unfailing love. She needed love that was higher than any mountain, and deeper than any ocean. She needed love that could spread across the earth, reaching any distance.
Her soul was dehydrated, tired and deflated. Jesus knew what she needed and He met her right there. My favourite part of this story is that He came to her, and not the other way around.
Just like He can meet you wherever you’re at in whatever condition you’re in. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, what you’ve thought and what you’ve said. He can truly satisfy – His love can resurrect, redeem and revive.
