Psalm 3:5 – I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.
Psalm 4:8 – In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone Lord, make me dwell in safety.
I don’t have problems falling asleep (I have quite the opposite problem, actually), but God keeps putting sleep deprivation in my heart. He keeps leading me to verses such as this, and I have no clue why. Well, I suppose I have some idea why – I’m guessing that God wants me to write about these verses here on this devotional because someone needs to read them.
Sleep, to put it simply, is Biblical. God doesn’t fall asleep so that we can. We can fall asleep each night knowing that God is our ever-present help. He’s our guardian in the night. Our Light in the darkness. He’s our safe tower – our shield, our refuge and our stronghold. Nothing is too big, too strenuous or too difficult for Him to overcome. I will not fear… though tens of thousands… assail me on every side.
Whatever is keeping your mind buzzing or your heart racing during the night – give it to Him because He cares. Remind yourself Who exactly sustains you. Lie down in peace and feel His arms wrapped around you, keeping you safe.
He doesn’t need you to stay awake. You don’t need you to stay awake. The God who sits on the throne of heaven on earth knows exactly what He’s doing. Feel His peace fill your heart.
I’m praying for you – sleep easy tonight.
