Exactly what He promised
Luke 1:46-55 – And Mary said, “I’m bursting with God-news; I’m dancing on the song of my Saviour God. God took one look at me and look what happened – I’m the most fortunate woman on earth!
What God has done for me will never be forgotten, the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all the others.
His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him.
He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts (boastful, prideful people).
He knocked tyrants (oppressive rulers) off their high horses, pulled victims out of the mud.
The starving poor sat down to a banquet, the callous rich were left out in the cold.
He embraced his chosen child, Israel; he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high.
It’s exactly what he promised, beginning with Abraham and right up to now.”
I’m so in love with this verse. This is Mary’s song after she was told she was pregnant with the Saviour of the world. Now, just imagine being a virgin (which in those times was fundamental to society if you weren’t married yet) and then being told that you have been impregnated with the Son of God, the One who will die for everyone’s sins. I don’t know if I would immediately start worshiping.
But Mary did. She remembered all that God has done in the past. She knew the Word. She remembered how He delivered Israel, just as He had promised. She remembered how He delivered Abraham, just as He had promised. She remembered and recalled aloud each and every time God fulfilled His big, bold and extravagant promises.
Oh, she worshiped Him because she had heard of His great mercies before – how they flow abundantly wave after wave. She knew that if His mercies reached the people of Israel, the starving poor, the victims and Abraham, they would also reach her. She knew that He would deliver this promise, the one inside of her.
So even though her promise hadn’t been fulfilled yet, she believed and trusted the God who spoke it over her. She recalled His goodness and worshiped Him right there in the midst of her waiting.
Isn’t that just the perfect example for us? Are you doubting what God is doing in your life? Are you wondering if He even is doing anything at all? Take yourself back to His word and recall all that He has done before. Won’t He do it again? Worship Him in the midst of your waiting. Worship Him, remembering His goodness.
