Romans 15:13 – I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the holy spirit.
As I was flying home from South Africa a couple of days ago, I started to think about my plans for 2017 – a few of the things that I wanted to do differently in order to live more fully. One of them is being confident in my relationship with the Lord.
I already have a relationship with Him. The past year of devotionals have drawn me closer and closer, giving me beautiful new insights to His love and glory. But somehow, for some reason, I have moments when I question whether I’m understanding Him correctly. I wonder if I’m actually walking in His will, or if I maybe got the wrong memo somewhere down the road. I hear so many God whispers throughout my Bible reading and journalling, yet some days I completely forget to let those joyous and peaceful whispers fuel my faith.
But God doesn’t want us to live in an unsure faith. He wants us to trust His Word so fully that our confidence in Him is overflowing in our lives. We don’t need to question who we are, what we’re doing or who He has called us to be. We don’t need to doubt what He says about us.
Of course, it’s so important to have accountability from friends and family in our lives – particularly our spiritual lives. But their word/opinion of God shouldn’t be the foundation of our faith. The foundation, the absolute core, of our relationship with God should be His merciful and faithful love, exemplified throughout His Word. It never fails. And that supplies us with the confidence we need.
