1 Kings 19:11-12 – Then he was told, “Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by.”
A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper.
Sometimes our lives are so busy and loud that it’s impossible for us to hear God’s gentle and quiet whisper. There have been so many times that I have been frustrated with my faith because God never spoke to me. But now I’m wondering if maybe it’s not that God never responded, but rather I never heard.
Do you know why God doesn’t talk through the fire, the earthquake or the shattering rocks? I mean – He’s God so surely He would do the big, powerful stuff to make our jaws drop slightly?
This the beautiful part… God speaks to us in a whisper because He’s close to us. He’s right next to you, all the time… He doesn’t need to shout, He just needs to whisper gently into your ear.
Are you able to hear Him? That’s the question. Is your mind too busy with anxious thoughts? Or is it too focused on your daily tasks, the every-day stresses? Is it too loud from all the other voices speaking into your life?
Make the time to hear from Him. Isolate yourself at some point every day to focus on His voice. Forget your to-do list and forget who is around you. Listen out for His gentle and quiet whisper.
