Colossians 3:2 – Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Paul wrote Colossians in prison. I mean, I struggled to write these devotionals when I had the flu in Portugal, so I can’t even really begin to imagine how it felt having to write God’s word in prison in those days.
I chose this sentence from the whole book, because I think Paul is in on something here. He knows that if we spend our every day focusing on earthly things, we’ll never get anywhere. If we’re fixated on BBC news, refreshing all of the terrible things happening every day across the world, we’ll always be disheartened. It’s hard to even walk down the High Street without questioning what’s going on with society. Let alone our own personal worlds and the storms we have to each face on our own.
I reckon that whilst Paul was in prison, he had to work on setting his mind on things above. I bet he had to remind himself to take his eyes off of himself, and fixate them on the King of Heaven, the One who died for him to give him eternal life. I think Paul knew he would lose hope if he didn’t do exactly that.
So don’t lose hope today. Set your mind on Heaven and Who loves you and awaits you. Earth is not our home.
