Serving out of love
Genesis 29:20 – So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.
In case you haven’t heard Jacob’s story – he fell in love with Rachel, Laban’s daughter. He asked to marry her, and Laban agreed that he could wed his daughter as long as he served on his farm for seven years. And so Jacob did. The story continues on after this (worth a read), but I want to pause here.
Firstly, imagine serving for seven years in order to marry the love of your life?! Jacob loved her so much that seven years were worth it. So much so in fact that they only felt like a few days.
This has encouraged me in my serving for the Lord. I serve in our church every week on youth team. I’m not working towards a goal that I know of, but I do it because of my love for the Lord and wanting young people to encounter that love for themselves.
Can we love the Lord so much that serving isn’t a chore? Can we, as God’s children, serve week in and week out not because we want something in return but purely because our love for God is so big? We want to serve Him because of what He has done for us. We want to serve Him because He reigns. We want to serve Him because we would rather serve Him than do anything else with our time.
