1 Samuel 3:10 – Then Samuel said, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”
I love the books of Samuel within the Bible. They’re actually some of the first books I started reading once I became serious about my Bible devotionals every day. I must have read this verse a while ago and had it speak to my heart because I have this one sentence underlined. As I sat down to read this morning, my Bible fell open to this page page and this verse jumped out at me.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone and you just knew they weren’t fully paying attention to you? Maybe they kept checking their phone or perhaps they were looking over your shoulder to the people behind you. You’d be speaking to them and they’d just mutter mmm, and oh yeah. It’s frustrating and sometimes really disheartening, right?
If I’m talking to Bradley about something and can tell he’s not 100% listening, I’ll nudge him and shout HELLO!?
I have a feeling that in our relationships with God, we’re the ones not paying attention. We’re the ones who are pre-occupied with looking elsewhere and concentrating on other things. Our thoughts are crazy, filled with things we still need to do and worrying about whatever is stressing us out.
What if God has been speaking to you all this time, but you just never listened? What if, that thing you have been praying for answers for, He’s been speaking to you but your mind was just too loud to actually hear it?
I love what Samuel says here – he declares that he’s listening for God’s word. He’s tuning out from everything else that’s going on and he’s really listening for His voice to speak over his situation.
Make the time today to listen to God. Forget your to-do list and let go of your negative thoughts. Make the time and the effort to really, truly listen.
