If you’re single
1 Corinthians 7:32-35 – I want you to live as free of complications as possible. When you’re unmarried, you’re free to concentrate on simply pleasing the Master. Marriage involves you in all the nuts and bolts of domestic life and in wanting to please your spouse, leading to so many more demands on your attention. The time and energy that married people spend on caring for and nurturing each other, the unmarried can spend in becoming whole and holy instruments of God. I’m trying to be helpful and make it as easy as possible for you, not make things harder. All I want is for you to be able to develop a way of life in which you can spend plenty of time together with the Master without a lot of distractions.
I don’t normally focus on a certain group of people when writing my devotionals. I like to keep them relative to anyone and everyone who happens to fall onto my website. But saying that, I stumbled upon this verse today and I instantly got goosebumps.
This is something I needed to hear a good few years ago when I was struggling with singleness. Unfortunately I never read this verse, but somehow God still managed to teach me the beauty of just this anyway.
That year before I met Bradley and I totally devoted myself to God was the closest I’ve ever been to Him. I’m not saying I don’t feel close to Him now – I do! But that season was something else. It was me seeking God with my whole heart every single day. Anytime I felt lonely, I looked for Him. He was the start of my day and the end of my day. Being in a committed, serious relationship takes a lot more time and energy than I ever thought it would. It’s beautiful and wonderful, but totally life-changing.
If you’re single, write this verse down. Read it over and over again. Let in sink in deep in your heart. When a wave of loneliness or worry comes, remind yourself of this precious season you’re in. Remind yourself that this is God’s way of getting all of your attention and devotion. Enjoy it whilst you can! And make the most of seeking Him with all that you have.
