He Chose You
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Paul begins this with something really important. He starts by reminding us that we are God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.
When I was doing a university placement that I well and truly hated a few years ago, I read this verse to myself every single morning.
I reminded myself that no matter what I was about to face that day, that I was chosen by God. Hand-picked. I told myself that because He chose me, I’m automatically holy and so, very dearly loved. After that, I clothed myself with those virtues.
I decided that I would be compassionate towards the teachers I worked with and the children I taught. I would show kindness to everyone. I would remain humble, gentle and patient no matter what situations I found myself in that day.
I decided to be forgiving and loving, even when I felt tired, hurt and used.
Some days were harder than others, but it really helped that I was declaring this verse over my day every morning. Now looking back, that season of my life which at the time I thought was the worst thing to ever happen to me, molded me into the person I am today. It stretched me, and most importantly it strengthened me.
This verse has power! Dissect it into smaller chunks as you read it and declare it over your own life. Become the person that God has chosen you to be. Display and strengthen those virtues everywhere you go to everyone you meet.
