John 8:31 – To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “if you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Living in a fallen, imperfect world is hard. Every day we all have a battle to face. We have to battle our own insecurities and negative thoughts. We have to live with our past, dragging it behind us like a heavy suitcase. We have to deal with people in our lives who may be hurting us, leaving nasty little scars on our hearts.
Jesus says a few sentences later that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. We are all slaves to our own and other people’s sins. We are held captive by ourselves. Locked away on our own in a prison cell, which over time will only ever destroy and starve us.
But when you know Jesus and you hold onto His word and His promise, you know the truth. You know that Jesus was left to die on that cross so that we could be set free. You know that He rose again three days later so that we can glorify Him for our freedom. You know that He paid the price so that we no longer have to.
Are you living free? Do you know that you have been set free? That you no longer have to dwell on the past or be weighed down by your sins? Do you know that in your freedom you have been forgiven for everything you did and everything you still are to do?
When I think of this verse, I imagine a bird being let out of his cage for the very first time. He’s free to fly all across the world, anywhere and everywhere he wishes to go, he now can go.
You have been set free!
