Where are you looking?
Matthew 14: 25-31 – Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
I love how Peter had the courage to ask Jesus if he could walk on water toward him. It shows how much he trusted Jesus. He got out of the boat and started to walk toward Him. I imagine Him looking straight into Jesus eyes, with sheer surprise and delight on his face that he was actually walking on water. I imagine the other disciples in the boat going crazy, with pure disbelief to what they were witnessing.
It was only when Peter looked around and noticed the wind that he began sinking. It was only when he stopped his eye contact with Jesus that he started to doubt himself. As soon as his eyes moved from Him, looking to where he was and what was going on that he became fearful.
Where are you looking? Are you looking at the storm around you? Or are your eyes fixed on Jesus – the one you’re walking towards?
Keep your eyes fixed on the One who is calling you. Keep them locked on Jesus, who is the rock, the solid foundation in your life.
But what I love the most about this verse is that as soon as Peter started panicking and sinking, Jesus immediately helped him back up. He was there in an instant to catch him and put him back on his feet.
Remember that Jesus won’t let you drown. He didn’t bring you this far to leave you. The storm is never too big for Him.
