What really is the meaning of life?
Ecclesiastes 4:7 – Again, I saw something meaningless under the sun.
So I have been reading Ecclesiastes this week. I won’t lie, as soon as I started reading the first chapter, I was totally confused. I didn’t understand at all.
It says that the book is written by a teacher. No name. We’re not sure who wrote it.
The entire book consists of him saying how meaningless life is under the sun. This phrase ‘under the sun’ is written at least thirty times throughout the whole book. Immediately I knew that he was trying to say something through this phrase. After a quick google, I learned that that ‘under the sun’ is meant as our view of the world, without God in the picture.
So the person who wrote this book was intentionally writing about life without God. He took it upon himself to look at what human life looked like without God. He basically uses reverse psychology to make us really question the meaning of life.
If not for God, why are we here? If not for a Greater Purpose beyond our comprehension, what is the meaning of all of this? Surely we weren’t created just to go to work, eat, pay bills, go to bed and then eventually die??
Without God life is pointless. It’s all in vain. In the words of the man who wrote Ecclesiastes, it’s totally meaningless.
This devotional isn’t written to make you feel empty. It’s to encourage you in the fact that the King of Heaven has given you purpose on this earth. He placed worth on your life when He knit you together in your mother’s womb and called you by name. He put breath in your lungs this morning and instantly gave you meaning. With God in it, your life has meaning. Be encouraged by that fact alone.
