The greatest love story
Hosea 1:2 – When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.”
Hosea 3:1 – “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred rasin cakes.i”
From that verse, you’re probably thinking (sarcastic voice) ‘okayyyyy, this is super encouraging’. But this is one of my favourite love stories of all time.
Hosea marries a promiscuous woman, who is nothing but unfaithful to him. She leads this life of recklessness – sleeping with men for money and constantly walking away from Hosea. Every time she leaves, he goes and finds her. He welcomes her home with open arms. There’s one point where he goes and ‘buys’ her back from a brothel. He spends his life and everything he has on his wife, loving her even when she’s insistent on walking away from him.
Their relationship is parallel to ours with God. God is Hosea and we are the unfaithful wife. God keeps loving us, keeps pursuing us in the midst of our unfaithfulness. He sacrifices His own son for our sake, knowing that we would sin and cause destruction.
We can never be too far away from God. He’s always close by, ready to welcome us home with open arms. His love has no limits, no strings attached.
Isn’t that just heart-breakingly beautiful? Isn’t it amazing to know that we are loved in our darkest hour? The God of the universe loves us so much, regardless of who we are and what we’ve done. I can’t get my head around it. His love is so faithful, so consistent and so present. Surely this is the greatest love story of all?
