Don’t lose a minute
2 Peter 1 3-11 – Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you – your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust.
So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wipes off the books.
So friends, confirm God’s invitation to you, his choice of you. Don’t put it off, do it now. Do this, and you’ll have your life on a firm footing, the streets paves and the way wide open into the eternal kingdom of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ.
This is a long verse – but a really, really good verse. Read it again, and then again. Break it down into smaller chunks.
First of all, Simon Peter wrote this. He was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. He experiences Jesus first-hand. He was by His side on His journey on earth. He witnessed all of those miracles and he was able to hear Jesus’ words of wisdom straight from His mouth.
Take a moment to really think about that. We have access to someone who was with Jesus all those years ago. We are able to read what he has to say about our Saviour.
And the best bit is, that Simon Peter says don’t waste a minute of pursuing God. Don’t put it off. Realise exactly what God is offering you – His personal invitation to eternal life.
Every now and again I think back to how many years I wasted not getting to know God. I’m still young, I know. But I knew about Him my whole life and I knew the gospel, but I never really understood the depth of it. I never really took it in.
If there’s one thing I could change about my life, it would be the years I spent trying to better who I was through my own power. It would be the years I tried to seek approval, acceptance and love from other people rather from the One who made me.
I wasted so much time!
Through Jesus, God has a gift for you. He has chosen you, and He is offering you a personal invitation to know Him better. He wants you to know Him personally and intimately. He wants a relationship with you. Not for you to follow the rules and be ‘religious’. He wants to love you, and in loving you He wants to counsel you – teaching you His glorious and majestic ways.
Don’t put it off. Don’t lose a minute of His love.
