Just before Lazarus is raised from the dead…
John 11:33-36 – When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in the spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
Mary and Martha were mourning the death of their brother, Lazarus. They were weeping out of grief. Jesus saw this. He knew that He was about to raise Lazarus back from the dead, yet He also wept.
Jesus was mourning with Mary and Martha. He saw their pain and their broken hearts, and it broke His heart too.
Have you ever seen someone you love cry? Have you ever been with someone whose heart broke in front of your eyes? Did your heart break for them?
That’s how much Jesus loves us. His heart breaks when ours breaks. When we mourn, He mourns too. Even though He sees the future and He sees how all things will be worked to good. Our God is a God who cares and who loves more deeply than we can ever imagine.
