Heart, soul and mind
Matthew 22:37-38 – Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Let’s dissect the verse a bit.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart – your ‘heart’ is connected to your emotions. It’s what you feel deep inside. Do you love God on an emotional level? Do you feel love for Him? Do you feel His presence when you spend time with Him?
This is like our personal relationships on Earth. I feel deep love for Bradley. I feel the butterflies, I feel sad when he’s away, I feel happy when he’s happy, I feel proud when he’s done something great. My love for him stirs up emotions in my heart.
Love the Lord your God with all your soul – your soul is your identity. It’s your persona.
Loving God with your soul is almost like saying ‘I belong to God. I’m His. I’m here on earth for Him.’ You identify yourself as a child of God.
Love the Lord your God with all your mind – your mind consists of your thoughts, understanding and your knowledge. For me, and probably most of you, this one is probably the most difficult. Do your thoughts love God? Are they fixed on Heavenly things?
If someone were to read your thoughts, would they see God at the center?
I’ve learned that the only way to fix my thoughts on God is to widen my understanding and knowledge of Him. I need to sit down daily to get to know Him. I need to know His story inside out. I need to know what He says about who He is and who I am.
Jesus says that this is the first and greatest commandment. That has real depth to it. I’m making it my daily goal to love God with all of me – heart, soul and mind.
