After the miracle
John 12:10-11 – So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
In the chapter before this one, Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the dead. This is the kind of miracle that people would probably hear about fast. I’m assuming news spread like wild-fire.
I love that the Bible says what happens after the miracle – it doesn’t always tell us. I would have originally thought that Lazarus would have been raised from the dead and then hallelujah – welcome happily ever after, Lazzy. But John tells us differently. Yes, of course he’s very happy to be back alive, as are his family and friends. John 12 tells us that they threw a party to honor Jesus, and serve him dinner and pour expensive perfume on his feet (as you do).
But the chief priests (the people with power), are annoyed. They’ve heard about the miracle and they’ve heard about the fuss it’s caused and they don’t like it. They don’t like Jesus and now, they don’t like Lazarus either. So they plan to kill him.
Thankfully, Lazarus has already experienced the power and the grace of Jesus Christ. He knows that as long as he’s on His side, he’s safe forever. People may be making plans to kill him, but ultimately it’s the Lord’s plan that prevails.
People may be making plans against you. People may be out to get you, for whatever reason. It’s probably not as life-threatening as our friend Lazarus, but you’re feeling the strain. Who triumphs in your life? Jesus or people? Who has the last say in your world?
As long as you stick with Him, His plan will always prevail.
