Whether you’re writing an essay, blog posts or a facebook update, I have five trusty little tips on how to easily improve your writing.
- Think About Your Punctuation
Try your best not to write like this!!!!! I understand that you can get excited!!!!!!!!! But please think about how often you use these little marks!!! Because this really drives people crazy!! Also, another tip, don’t overuse, commas, okay?
If you have more than two exclamation marks in a paragraph, stop and think is this really necessary?
For commas, I’d advise reading your sentence out loud. When are you taking a natural pause? That’s where your comma should go. Commas are needed, definitely. But don’t overcomma.
2. No Rambling
This is probably the most difficult one out of the bunch. But sadly, not many people enjoy reading a load of waffle. This is something I really stuggle with! The best advice for overcoming rambling is to finish writing and then going back and deleting any sentences or words that aren’t crucial to your written piece. Keep your writing short, sweet and to the point.
3. Plan What You Want to Say
I make a list before anything I write. This helps you to structure your writing, as well as really thinking about what you want to say. It also makes a blank Word Document look way less scary.
4. Use Paragraphs
There is nothing worse than a massive clump of writing. This is so off-putting to your readers. Break up your writing into bite-size chunks. In turn, this will help with cutting down your rambling too! Your readers will thank you for it.
5. Write in Your Own Voice
This is a biggie. The best thing you will ever do as a writer is to learn your own voice. Write as you speak. For readers, this is the door to your personality. Reading is so much more enjoyable when you can really hear the writer.
