I was clearing out my room last week, and found a treasure box I completely forgot I owned. Inside were a bunch of things from my childhood – like my old school lunch card, a couple of necklaces and a few postcards from friends.
But then, I found one of my favourite ever memories as a child, and probably what kick-started my love for writing- the time I wrote letters to my garden fairy…
I’m not sure how old I was, but one Christmas my mum gave me a book about fairies. Inside were tiny little envelopes and pieces of paper to write letters to the fairies who live in your garden (because every garden has a fairy).
I obviously took this very seriously, and decided to write a letter straight away and left it on the step outside for my garden fairy.
The next morning I woke up to find a different envelope sitting on the same step in my garden. I remember running out the back door so fast and screaming with excitement to my mum.
This was the first letter I received..
And of course, I replied as fast as I could…
These letters went on for a long time (probably too long, my mum had to break my heart eventually). My mum took her role as Rene, the garden fairy very, very seriously. I remember thinking that I was the most special girl on the planet, because none of my friends at school had fairies writing to them.
Rene told me how she got her “fairy grandmother” to make a dress out of the rose petals I picked for her. She also explained that it took her so long to write letters because her pen was a human-sized pen and it was really heavy for her to hold, as she was only 10cm.
Sadly my mum can only find that one letter I sent to Rene 🙁 But we’re on a hunt to find the others.
I guess I have my mum to thank for my imagination.
