I watched this video two years ago and it spoke to my heart. The video is actually aimed at men, but I looked at it from a woman’s perspective. It made me think, what or more importantly who is my idol?
An idol is the thing that, if you lost, would make your world fall apart.
I had made someone my idol and to be honest I would not be surprised if the majority of other girls has too. Would your world fall apart if the boy you love said he doesn’t want you? Does your day depend on how he treats you? Does your life rely on his?
Ever since that day God taught how to be happy on my own. It was a very slow and very long process. He taught me that no person will ever be able to fill that void in my heart. No human being can ever hold the weight of providing another human being’s joy.
I cringe when I hear girls call their boyfriends their “everything”. Noooooo! Honey, you’re setting yourself up for a massive disaster. What happens on the day when he lets you down? What happens when he isn’t there anymore? What happens to you?
I’m not being negative about relationships, at all. I love love. I love my relationship with Bradley. But I think there’s a reason that God made me wait for Bradley. He knew that if He gave me Bradley at the age of 19, I would’ve made him my source of happiness. I would have been needy of his attention, love and time. I would have expected it 24/7. Which simply is not healthy, and of course (no matter how perfect he is) Bradley can’t possibly hold the weight of my needy heart. Nobody can. No one can fill the void that only God can fill.
God taught me during my singleness to rely on Him. He showed me that He’s the only One who can comfort my needy and distressed heart. I learned that no matter what happens, who’s beside me or where I am, God is the only One I need.
The best advice I can give you is to find yourself in God. Find your identity in what He says about you. God is the only thing in the whole wide world that will stay constant. He’s the only One who can carry your heart today, tomorrow and for all eternity.
