Welcome to the first Wedding Wednesday, post-wedding! I’m still a bit dazzled about the fact that the wedding has actually happened and that I’m officially Mrs Mieke Maybury. We returned from our Honeymoon to Mexico last Sunday, and it was just as perfect as our wedding day was.
I have so many Wedding Wednesday ideas for the next few months (so many that you may get bored of me), but a lot of them require our professional photos. We won’t be getting them for a while I’m guessing, so up until them I’ll post what I can with what I have. Over time, I’ll slowly give you pieces of our big day right from the days before up until the last day of our honeymoon. You’ll have it all, I promise!
It’s not English tradition, but I really, really, really wanted to do a speech at my wedding. I felt like I had so much to say and I didn’t want the moment to pass. A couple of days before the wedding I spent an hour or so writing my speech, and on the day I read it out to all of our guests before the official speeches began. Afterwards a few people told me that I should post it online, and just like that – my first post-wedding Wedding Wednesday blog post was decided.
Fortunately, my uncle took a photo of me during the speech, so now you can have a vision of what it was like whilst reading. How handy! Just a little warning; it is a bit long. Some of you (a lot of you) probably won’t make it until the end, and I do not judge you for that.
I know it’s not tradition for the bride to make a speech at her wedding, but I just couldn’t imagine letting this day pass without saying a few things to some pretty special people in my life. This is the day I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl, and I know that I need to make the most of it whilst I can, so I hope you don’t mind me talking for 10 minutes about the wonderful people who have helped today come to be.
First of all, I need to thank my family who have travelled all the way from South Africa to be here today. I honestly did not expect so many of you to come all the way, but I’m so honoured and incredibly thankful that you did. A special thank you to my grandparents; firstly for being here today but most importantly for raising the best parents a girl could ever have wished for. I have the best mammie and pappie in the world, and I know that you are responsible. I have a little gift for you.
Two years ago today I attended my auntie Louise’s wedding to Roland. That day filled me with so much hope that I would one day find my own prince charming. I fell in love with how in love you two were with each other. Happy Anniversary! We have a small present for you too.
Next I’d like to thank my church family. I don’t think any of you will really understand how much you mean to me. I remember back in 2012, I prayed for a church friend, and now 4 years later I have too many to count. Through your endless encouragement and continuous love, all of you have played a part in who I am and who Bradley and I are as a couple.
Anna and Craig, thank you for marrying us! I love that you are not just our leaders but also our friends. If it weren’t for the two of you, listening to God’s call and stepping out into the unknown with faith and expectancy, Bradley and I may never have crossed paths. Thank you for always sharing your wisdom with us and encouraging us on the difficult days. Thank you for always making us laugh and most importantly for always believing in us. I thank you for all of this with a full and totally overwhelmed heart.
Charlie, our very own flower fairy! Thank you for making this barn beautiful, and for the most stunning bouquet I’ve ever seen. Thank you for spending so much time pouring out all of your ideas and creativity into our special day. You have a breath-taking gift, and I’m so honoured to have you as my friend and that you were as excited about my wedding as I was.
Thank you to our wonderful groomsmen. I’ve said this before, but if you were all girls you would have been my bridesmaids. Thank you for helping us set up yesterday and this morning. Stuart, thank you for being Bradley’s partner in crime growing up. You’re pretty special – I am so excited to see what God is going to do in your life.
Matt, Eddie and Lewis – thank you for welcoming me with open arms at Hillsong Oxford back in 2013. You have been like brothers to me, and I value your friendships more than words can say. Eduardo, you have been the most amazing Man of Honour today, trailing behind my dress to make sure it doesn’t get muddy and making sure it looks perfect in every single photo. You’re incredible.
How beautiful are my bridesmaids?!
Bethan, thank you for being my best friend for more years than I can count and I hope for many more.
Tash, my biff. We became sisters in Christ the moment Beth Moore told us to turn to the person next to us and pray over their lives. I underestimated that moment, never realising how important a part you’d play in my life. Thank you for your daily prayers and encouragement. There isn’t a day that passes that they aren’t appreciated.
Beautiful Carley, thank you for blessing all of us with your many gifts today. For doing the girls’ hair, for making a few of the decorations and for singing with Mark at the ceremony and here at the barn. You’re such an inspiring person to have as a friend – I love your humility and your endless creativity. I love you big time, more than I love cats.
Katie, thank you for being my maid of honour. For planning my hen-do at the same time as planning your wedding. You have been by my side for almost 5 years and there hasn’t been a dull moment. You’re so loved.
Emily. You have grown to be my best friend and sister these past few years. Thank you for listening to all my stories over the past 5 years and for always laughing at my jokes. Thank you for entertaining Bradley and I every evening at dinner, and most of all thank you for making my brother so happy. I love you both very much.
I have gained two more parents today – Mark and Heather. Words can’t describe how blessed I am to have you both as my new parents-in-law. From the day I met you, you welcomed me in with smiles on your faces. You supported my blog from the very beginning and have encouraged me in my dream ever since. What God has called me to do and who He has called me to be can be difficult to understand, but I love that your faith is big enough to get it. Thank you for raising the man of my dreams. You have raised him to be loving, caring, thoughtful, generous, humble, motivated, hard-working, faith-filled and courageous. When I first met him, I remember telling my mum that he was simply too good to be true and that I’ll find his flaw one day. Almost two years have passed, and I’m still waiting to see if there’s something he can’t do, and after getting to know the both of you I realised that he is the way he is because of you.
Heather, thank you for making our beautiful cake, especially with your arm still being on the mend. You have put so much thought and effort into it – I can’t wait to taste the chocolate orange! We have a gift for you.
Megan, I also have you to thank for who Bradley is today. He’s the world’s best shopper and personal stylist. Thank you for dressing him up in dresses and teaching him how a girl thinks. I’m so excited to have you as my sister-in-law, and even more excited to celebrate yours and Nick’s wedding in August as a Maybury.
Thank you to my mammie and pappie. Our wedding day has been so perfect, and I’m so thankful that you have blessed us with the funds to make it happen.
Mummy, you’re the strongest and most beautiful woman I know. You’re an inspiration to me, and I hope and pray that I will be just like you when I’m older. Your love for God is what drew me to Him. You’re my best friend and my biggest cheer leader. Thank you for always loving me and pushing me to grow and do the things I’m too scared to do. Thank you for believing in my dream and never doubting it for one second. We have a gift to give to you also.
Daddy, you’re my hero. You have loved me my whole life, and I’ve never doubted it for a second. You have provided for me my whole life, and never a word of complaint has ever left your lips. You have supported me in my dream more than words can ever say. You have never stopped believing in me, even after my many faults and failures. You make it easy for me to believe that I have a Father in heaven who loves, protects and wants nothing but the best for me. I love you and appreciate you more than words can say.
Bradley – my best friend, my partner in crime, the love of my life and now, my husband. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my days holding your hand and talking about everything and anything. You walked into my life, and filled my heart with so much laughter and happiness within a matter of days.
I wrote down a prayer for my future husband 6 months before I met you. I thought that today would be the perfect time to share it with you…
Tonight I’m going to pour out the desires of my heart, Lord. I pray for a loving, caring and incredible husband who is so in love with You, and daily encourages me in my relationship with You. I want a husband who will look after me, make me laugh and hold my hand during my worst days. I pray that we both look to You always and praise your name together. I want a relationship that is so focused on You that other people are inspired and encouraged through us.
I pray that I love every day for You, living the dream that you placed in my heart. I hope I am filled with love, compassion, patience, humility, strength and happiness. I want to always be thankful and to never stop praising your name. Let me and my husband set the world on fire for you, God.
I have no idea what my future hold, but I know that you have the most amazing plans for me, God. You will deliver me. You’ve never failed and you won’t start now.
So today is the day that God answered my prayer – He has blessed me with you as my husband. To God be the glory for our marriage, babe. I pray that I never stop thanking Him for you. I pray that His love will always be the foundation of who we are and what we do. I pray that He will always be the one who guides us and protects us, and that we never take our eyes off of heaven. With you by my side and Jesus in front of us, we can do anything and everything. I can’t wait to start this adventure with you.
